The following information might be useful to you if you would like to help your child at home.
Please take the time to talk to your child about what they have done in their school day.
Overview of our Learning.
In Year One we like to think of it as 'building blocks' between the children's learning in Foundation Stage and preparing the children for their responsibilities that come later in school.
During the children's time in Year 1, we build on previous learning experiences and skills encouraging each individual to take steps to build on, to further their learning and independence.
Within the first term the children will have access to continuous provision during the day, with links to the Year One National Curriculum and our current topic. Every child will have chance to access both Literacy and Maths in guided groups with the outcome to be ready for whole class teaching and learning in October.
In Literacy we follow the learning objectives set out in the new National Curriculum for Year One. Phonics is incorporated daily into our literacy lessons as our focus is to enhance children’s current phonics knowledge and to encourage the children in applying their phonics skills, to become successful, independent writers. Phonics also has its own daily slot where children are taught to apply and revise sounds.
In Year One Children are encouraged to write sentences daily throughout the whole curriculum. Our fiction writing includes: writing a range of descriptions such as characters and settings and story writing with repetition and familiar settings. Our nonfiction topics include: poetry, instruction writing and recount writing (based around our school trips.) Grammar learning is incorporated daily into our Literacy lessons.
In Maths we also follow the objectives set out by the National Curriculum which links into the scheme of work that Richard Hill follows. During the first term our main focus is on place value and addition and subtraction as these feed in and support our learning of other mathematical areas. Children are taught how to use a range of equipment to help with calculations and problem solving activities such as number tracks, number lines and number squares.
Our Topic: Superheroes
Key Text: Supertato by Sue Hendra
During this topic we will be learning about our favourite superheroes and villains! We will be using these as a basis to be our very own real-life superhero.
We will have the opportunity to create our own superhero costume with a mask and develop our own special unique powers.
Areas of focus:
PE: Strength and movement.
Science: Our super bodies.
History: Super historical figures.
D&T: Super-foods and Mask-making.
PSHE: Good and bad choices.
Our scheduled hall time is Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.
This half term we will be focusing on strength and movement.
In some circumstances our PE slot may not be available and may have to be moved. Due to this reason please can you make sure your child has their PE kit in school everyday.
Sometimes PE will be outside, which will mean children will need warm clothing and trainers as well as their indoor PE kit with plimsolls. If jewellery is worn please remove this on PE days.
Homework is very important as it helps your child to go over and practice what they have learnt in school. It also helps to keep you informed on their current progress and topics within the classroom. Homework will vary each week to do with our topic including: writing, maths and creative skills.
Spellings and reading three times a week is also essential to help your child to develop and progress. In Year One we will read with the children continually in the class through whole class, group and independent activities. Each week we will try to read the child's home reading book with them and evidence this in their reading record.
