Phonics

Hi everyone,

Today we are going to focus on the 'oo' digraph because it is a bit of a tricky one due to it making 2 different sounds!

Your phonics challenge today is to write down these words on some small pieces of paper (parents it would be a good idea to get your child to do 3/4 of these while you write the rest):

wood
look
book
hood
cook
hook
foot
good
broom
zoom
food
boot
spoon
moon
tooth
roof
hoop

Once you have all of these words on cards in front of you then your task is to try to read each word and sort them into 2 groups: A long 'oo' group (moon) and a short 'oo' group where the digraph makes an 'u' sound (look). You might have to try both of the oo sounds to check which one makes sense. Listen to my voice note below for an example of trying to read the word 'foot'.

Which group has more words in? Which group has less words in? I wonder if you can spot any words with the 'oo' digraph in around your house? Maybe you can find a word in your books or on some food packaging or a newspaper? Maybe you can spot an object in your house with it in instead! Have a hunt and see how many you can find!

Have a good day everyone!
Miss Heafford
